One of Canada’s most historic cemeteries, Mount Pleasant has served Toronto since 1876. It is the final resting place of many prominent Canadians, including former prime minister William Lyon Mackenzie King; department store magnate Timothy Eaton; a founder of McMaster University and CIBC William McMaster ; and renowned pianist Glenn Gould.
Mount Pleasant’s abundant tree collection makes the cemetery one of North America’s most significant arboretums. The cemetery has many miles of walking paths, interspersed with fountains, statues, large botanical gardens, and rare and distinct trees. Birds and other wildlife also enhance its natural beauty.
Mount Pleasant Cemetery contains remarkable architecture amongst its many monuments. The cemetery was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2000.
