In Malaysia, a practice known as “open house” (rumah terbuka) is common during the festivities, especially during Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Deepavali, Chinese New Year, and Christmas. Open house means that all well-wishers are received and that everyone, regardless of background, is invited to attend. Free foods and gifts are prepared by the host.
Masjid Cina Titi Papan is a small mosque in the heart of George Town, Penang. As a mosque that many ethnic Chinese Muslims attend, Masjid Cina Titi Papan hosts a open house event every Chinese New Year.
Children all get red envelopes. Adults can get a large(8-kg) bag of rice if they can answer a simple question(often related to Islam religion) correctly in English, Chinese or Bahasa Malaysia.
Chinese pop songs from 1960s and 70s are played, all kinds of famous Penang foods are offered at the venue. Satay, Kuey Teow Soup, Ais Kacang… and of course Mandarin oranges for Chinese New Year. Anyone can join and eat for free.
