AirAsia X stalls on flight refunds for cancelled Adelaide to Kuala Lumpur route

Adelaide travellers left high and dry when AirAsia X cancelled all its South Australian flights in January are still chasing refunds more than three months later.

The Malaysian-based budget airline cited a lack of profits for pulling out of the Adelaide to Kuala Lumpur route barely one year after commencing.

It made the announcement in December, promising pre-booked passengers either a timely refund within 14 days, credit for another flight, or the chance to be rerouted from Melbourne or Perth, provided the passenger made their way interstate at their own expense.

AirAsia eyes NZ return

AirAsia is keen to fly from New Zealand to Australia to connect with services to Asia, which could mean more bargain fares for holidaymakers.

The low-cost carrier’s chief executive, Tony Fernandes, said he hoped to launch services this year.

The airline’s international division, AirAsiaX, flew from Christchurch to Malaysia for about a year before pulling out of the route in May 2012 after suffering a sharp drop in demand following earthquakes in the southern city.

Fernandes said during a visit to Sydney yesterday that as direct flights from Asia to New Zealand had not worked, the best service could include a stopover in Australia.

Tony Fernandes says AirAsia plans to resume flights to Europe next year

SYDNEY: AirAsia chief executive Tony Fernandes said on Thursday that AirAsia X , the long-haul arm of Asia’s biggest budget airline, plans to resume flights to Europe next year.

Speaking to reporters in Sydney about the carrier’s operations, Fernandes also said the search for passengers from crashed flight QZ8501 will be called off within days.

In a renewed push into Europe, Fernandes said that London will be the likely first destination for AirAsia X flights. It previously operated Airbus A340s to London and Paris, but cancelled those services in 2012.

Fernandes said the search for the remaining missing passengers on Flight QZ8501, which crashed into the Java Sea in stormy weather on Dec. 28, would likely be called off within the next seven to 10 days. “Probably then we’ll have to close it down,” Fernandes said.

Meanwhile Reuters reported The Bangkok Post quoted Fernandes as urging Asean members to allow majority ownership of airlines in each country by citizens of the region. He was speaking at an aviation conference in Bangkok on Tuesday – Reuters
