Kite-Making, (Beijing and Jiangsu Province, China)

Invented in China in 220 BCE, kites were traditionally made from bamboo frames covered with paper and silk and used to send messages, military signals and measure distances. Over 1000 years later, people began adapting kites for leisure activities and recreation, and traditions such as flying kites to welcome the spring season during Qing Ming Festival began.

Film Screening: A Bite of China: The Story of Staple Foods

Wu Man & Haruka Fujii: Asian Crossroads

China and Japan share a rich cultural history that can be traced back more than a thousand years. Both societies share many musical traditions and influences and have similar styles and performance practices. For the world premiere performance of “Asian Crossroads,” Chinese pipa virtuoso Wu Man and Japanese percussionist Haruka Fujii, fellow members of Yo-Yo Ma’s Silk Road Ensemble, perform solo works from their respective native lands, and unite in improvisational works that fuse their two styles.
