Malaysia AirAsia to focus growth from secondary hubs as Langkawi-Hong Kong, Guangzhou are launched

AirAsia is preparing to establish a hub on the Malaysian island of Langkawi following a landmark deal which has resulted in a 70% reduction in charges – an indicator of the high importance placed on charges by the AirAsia group. Langkawi will become Malaysia AirAsia’s sixth hub as services to Guangzhou and Hong Kong are launched.

Several other new international destinations are expected including Bangkok under a plan which will see at least five A320s based in Langkawi by 2020. Langkawi currently only has regular international services to Singapore.

The new Langkawi hub is part of an overall strategy by the AirAsia Group to focus growth on secondary airports. At the group’s original Malaysian subsidiary several new domestic and international routes from secondary hubs are planned for the next year despite a significant slowdown in fleet growth.

It is hard to see AirAsia’s turbulence problems getting better at a lower altitude.

Asia’s biggest low-cost carrier lost more than quarter of its value after Hong Kong-based GMT Research released a report June 10 questioning the airline’s reliance on associates to funnel profits to the listed parent company. Shares recovered somewhat Thursday, but remain near a five-year low.

AirAsia named ‘World’s Best Low Cost Airline’

PARIS – AirAsia has been named the World’s Best Low Cost Airline and Asia’s Best Low Cost Airline for the seventh consecutive year at the Skytrax World’s Airline Awards held at the Paris Air Show today.

Skytrax is the global benchmark of airline excellence and one of the most prestigious accolades for the airline industry with 19 million customer surveys completed worldwide by over 160 nationalities, measuring standards across 41 key performance indicators of an airline’s front-line products and services.

Tony Fernandes, group CEO of AirAsia, was present to receive the awards at the Paris Air Show 2015 along with CEOs from the AirAsia Group.

“We faced many challenges this past year but I am proud to say that our staff banded together for our guests and we have emerged stronger than ever. To be named the ‘World’s Best’ for the seventh consecutive year is an incredible honour, and I dedicate it to the 17,000 AirAsia Allstars who are the force behind it all,” Fernandes said.

AirAsia mulls ‘filling-up’ routes terminated by Mas

KUALA LUMPUR, June 11 — AirAsia X Bhd will consider ‘filling-up’ the routes terminated by Malaysia Airlines (MAS) only if they are commercially viable, AirAsia acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Benyamin Ismail said.

“If they (Malaysia Airlines) are reducing it, it has to be due to commercial reason. We will look into it and if it makes sense for us, we will do it,” he said when asked if AirAsia X would be interested in routes axed by MAS.

Identifying new routes was part of the long-haul low-cost airline’s plan to return to profitability, he told reporters on the sidelines of the Global Airport Development 2015 conference here, today. “This year is all about returning to profitability.

We are introducing three new routes,” he said, adding AirAsia X’s biggest revenue generators were North Asia and Australia destinations.

On the refunds issue in Australia after the airline cancelled all its South Australian routes, Benyamin said all the refunds had been paid. As for starting flights to Europe, he said the airline does not have the right aircraft for those destinations now but the Airbus A330neo that is coming in the next two years is capable of flying direct to London.

“So, I have told Tony (AirAsia Bhd group CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes), wait for two years, then we will fly to London,” he added. — Bernama
