Opening Reception – EMERGENCE – A Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition

Emerging Young Artists and Beijing Hanwei International Art Centre are pleased to announce an exciting new exhibition of Chinese contemporary artists at the Toronto Center for the Arts titled Emergence, A Contemporary Chinese Art Exhibition. Curated by Emerging Young Artists and Zhang Siyong, the exhibition will run from the 11th to the 21st of August. The opening reception will take place on Saturday, August 11th, from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. The forum will be held at the Debate Room in the Hart House, University of Toronto.

The eight Chinese artists invited to participate in Emergence explore the relationships between the parts and the whole on several different levels: the human versus nature (Li Wang), personal memory and how it relates with collective memory (Li Hongbo and Zhang Chunhua), the relationship between the spirit and the body (Zhou Song), how the particular relates with the universal and vice-versa (Wang Fei and Jia Xinyu), the complex dialogue between visual form, perception, content, and interpretation (Yang Shuwen and Jia Shanguo).

This is the first exhibition of its kind in Toronto, as it will allow the public to see a face of China that is less familiar. When we think about Chinese art, ink calligraphy instantly comes to mind. This is not what the viewer will find when visiting Emergence. The artists represented in this exhibition showcase artwork that make use of the most disparate mediums, to the extent that there is not one specific artistic genre that fits all: from painting, and sculpture, to installation art, the artists that participate in Emergence are representative of a country that, for the best or the worst, is abreast of the times and maybe even ahead of it.

Guests can meet the artists in person at this exclusive event, enjoy our well selected hors d’oeuvre and immerse yourselves in one of Toronto’s most exciting exhibitions in August.
