The 400-year-old Fort Galle, built by the Portuguese and then fortified by the Dutch, is a 10-minute drive away. Take a daytrip to Udawalawe National Park to spot elephants, wild buffalo, deer and leopards; the park is said to rival the savannah reserves of Africa. A little farther afield, Yala National Park is home to the world’s highest concentration of leopards. A visit to the Handunugoda Tea Factory, a traditional low country facility that produces some of the best silver tips, is not to be missed. This area truly is a diver’s paradise. The short drive to Unawatuna is worth it for the stunning wildlife and shipwrecks in the deep sea just off the coast. Head into Hikkaduwa to try the roti, an Indian flatbread that’s simple but wonderfully tasty. The Roti Shop has a variety of sandwiches, including avocado, prawns, bacon, chocolate banana and pineapple.
