Reopening of Kuala Lumpur-London route ‘definitely on the cards’: AirAsia CEO

CEO Tony Fernandes said on Twitter on Wednesday that he will be discussing the possibility of re-opening of the air route with London Mayor Boris Johnson next week.

SINGAPORE: AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes revealed on Wednesday (Nov 26) that plans to re-open the Kuala Lumpur-London air route are “definitely on the cards”, having ended its long-haul flights to United Kingdom in 2012.

Mr Fernandes said on Twitter that he was “pleased” to announce the re-opening of the route, and will be in discussion about this with the Mayor of London Boris Johnson “next week”.

He added that KL-London is the “most wanted route” for AirAsia X – the budget airline’s long-haul associate airline. “We will deliver it, I am quite sure,” he said, adding that Hawaii is also being considered as part of the company’s growth strategy.

Before announcing the re-launch of the KL-London route, Mr Fernandes already promised free tickets to people who tell him why they love AirAsia X. “Tell me why you love AirAsia X and I will give one free ticket to our inaugural flight from KL to London and back. One from Asia, one from Europe,” he tweeted.

The air route to London ended in March 2012, with AirAsia citing high taxes in Europe – making it difficult for them to lower air fares – and a sluggish European economy for exiting the market.
