Patchwork is both aesthetic (to create beautiful patterns by sewing patches of either regular or irregular shape) and functional (to cover holes in cloth that has worn thin or to add more layers for warmth).
According to legend, patches sewn on the clothing of children would bestow happiness and health upon them. A wide variety of items in China—including bags, bedding, cushions, and ornamental items—feature patchwork. More than half of China’s ethnic minorities practice some form of patchwork.

Jin Yuanshan
Ms. Jin is ethnic Korean, originally from Harbin. She is 68 years old and has been doing patchwork/quilting for many decades. She first started creating patchwork when her husband was hospitalized with cancer. Her work is influenced not only by her Korean heritage, but by other ethnic minority patterns that she has been researching. She has experience with exhibitions, presenting and teaching quilting, and she has taught at Tsinghua University. She is currently the only artist who represents the far northeast region of China.
拼布艺术，顾名思义，就是将零碎小布缝制在一起成为一件物品的手工艺术。除了纯装饰性的艺术形式，比如装饰画，该艺术结合实用的特点，将小布块缝制成被子、坐垫、手机袋子、手提袋、零钱包等日用品。在欧洲，美国，日本，韩国已经广泛流行。近年来，拼布艺术在中国受到越来越多人的青睐。
金媛善，朝鲜族的中国拼布艺术家，痴迷于拼布几十载。她两次获得中国国际家用纺织品设计大赛奖，成为清华大学艺术系的客座教授。2007年在东京国际拼布博览会上，她的《姹紫嫣红》获得二等奖。这位曾经做过与艺术毫不沾边的统计师的人，对拼布艺术有她独到的理解。“我始终说画家是用笔和墨在纸上画，我是用针和五彩的线在五彩的布上画。但是我并不是艺术家。每一幅作品做的时候，都寄托了自己的心愿。我跟任何人都是这样说，我的一生是藏在五彩线里的。”
