Jinli Pedestrian Street, Chengdu, Sichuan, China

Jinli Pedestrian Street is a major attraction in Chengdu. As part of the Temple of Marquis, all the buildings here are built in the Qing Dynasty style.

There are varies of shops here selling Chinese traditional arts and crafts along with other cultural and creative products. Many of the shops follow the “Three Kingdoms” Culture theme since Temple of Marquis is a major site of “Three Kingdoms” Culture.

Sugar painting is a traditional  Chinese folk art using hot, liquid sugar to create objects. After it cools, it will be stick to a bamboo stick and carried away for consumption. It’s a popular snack for Chinese children.

Sugar paintingCustomers usually select a figure by spinning the arrow on a wheel which will randomly land on popular objects. These objects are often animals, like rooster, fish, monkey, dog and dragon. You may also pay a higher fee to order a specific object to be painted.

In China, Chengdu is famous for its Sichuan cuisine. UNESCO declared Chengdu, the capital of Sichuan Province, to be a city of gastronomy in 2011 to recognise the sophistication of its cooking. Unsurprisingly you can find many local snacks along the street. Most of the traditional snacks are not spicy as one may have thought since chili pepper found its way to China only after the “discovery” of the New World.

Jinli Pedestrian Street is free of admission while you need to buy tickets in order to visit other parts of Temple of Marquis.
