NokScoot unveils first aircraft

NokScoot, the new Bangkok-based airline, has taken a major step towards its launch with the unveiling of its aircraft livery and staff uniforms.

The long-haul low-cost carrier, which is a joint venture between Thailand’s Nok Air and Singapore’s Scoot, will carry a distinctive aircraft design, combining Scoot’s yellow and white livery with Nok’s trademark bird’s beak on the front of the cockpit. The NokScoot logo is also painted on the tailfin.

The South Korean government is going after sellers of uncertified camera extenders, threatening fines of up to 30 million won ($27,000) and prison time of as long as three years. According to Korea’s Ministry of Science, “selfie sticks” that have bluetooth functionality should be classified as frequency-emitting communications equipment and go through rounds of testing before being approved for commercial sale. On Thursday, the government asked citizens to help “root out” the distribution of these unapproved bluetooth-equipped selfie sticks by reporting on such sales. On Friday, authorities said they would begin doing checks on retailers.

Global terror attack deaths rose sharply in 2013, says report

The number of deaths from terrorism increased by 61% between 2012 and 2013, a study into international terrorism says.

There were nearly 10,000 terrorist attacks in 2013, a 44% increase from the previous year, the Global Terrorism Index 2014 report added.

The report said militant groups Islamic State, al-Qaeda, Boko Haram and the Taliban were behind most of the deaths.

Million dollar baby: Canadians handed huge bill after birth

A Canadian couple are facing a bill of almost $1m (£638,000) from an American hospital, because their daughter was born prematurely while they were on holiday in Hawaii.

New mum Jennifer Huculak-Kimmel says her travel insurance company has refused to cover the costs.

It claims a bladder infection, not declared by the family before the trip, was a pre-existing condition.
