AIRBNB HOSTS WILL NEED TO REGISTER WITH CITY OF SAN FRANCISCO

The rules are changing for people in San Francisco who rent out their rooms to visitors. The “Airbnb law” takes effect Monday. ABC7 News spoke with one city supervisor that is trying to put it on hold.

Just like a contractor going for a building permit, San Franciscans who want to offer their homes or rooms for short-term rental will have to apply.

Airbnb to collect taxes in more big cities

Airbnb’s been struggling with numerous legal issues for a while now, and one of the biggest complaints against the service is that hosts have been using it to set up illegal hotels to avoid paying taxes. These days, Airbnb’s trying to get on the good side of the law, so after getting rid of sketchy listings (in NYC, at least), it’s now collecting tourist taxes in more locations. The service has been doing just that in San Francisco and Portland, Oregon since last year, but now the list of locations has grown to include San Jose, California and Amsterdam in the Netherlands (starting this week, as well as Washington and Chicago starting on February 15.

Toronto is world’s best city to live in, Economist study says

Toronto is the world’s best city to live in, according to a study of major metropolises by The Economist Intelligence Unit.

And Montreal is the second-best, with Stockholm, Amsterdam and San Francisco rounding out the top five.

The two Canadian cities topped the overall scoring in the 2015 Safe Cities Index published this week by the EIU, a unit of The Economist magazine. It is based on a ranking of 50 major cities by a new study of safety along with past rankings based on liveability and cost of living. Cities were further sorted according to past country rankings based on business environment, degree of democracy and food security.

Vancouver, which often scores highly in global rankings of this kind, was not included in the survey; nor was any other Canadian city.

The move follows that of Amazon.com, which said last week that it would collect sales tax from Illinois shoppers beginning Feb. 1, in compliance with a new state law.

S.F. Democrats want Airbnb to pay back taxes

Add the San Francisco branch of the Democratic Party to those formally calling for Airbnb to pay its back taxes.

The San Francisco Democratic County Central Committee, the local Democratic Party’s governing body, voted overwhelmingly Wednesday to approve a resolution calling for Airbnb and other short-term rental companies to pay back taxes to the city. Opponents of legislation that legalized short-term rentals in the city, which Mayor Ed Lee signed in October, estimate Airbnb owes San Francisco $25 million for not collecting the hotel tax over the past few years.
