Taxi drivers ask for emergency meeting at city hall to stop Uber

Toronto’s taxi drivers are appealing to the city, police, insurance companies and the public to help stop the ride-sharing service Uber.

Toronto Taxi Alliance, a group of taxi representatives specifically formed to combat Uber, held a press conference at city hall to call for an emergency meeting on how to immediately stop the company’s operations in Toronto.

“Please stop this. Please use existing bylaws to stop this before things get out of hand,” said Behrouz Khamseh, the chair of Taxi Action. He was pleading with the police chief, Mark Saunders, to enforce bylaws against Uber.

Jetstar cancels flights to and from Bali due to volcanic ash cloud

Jetstar has been forced to cancel a number of flights in and out of Bali after due to a nearby volcanic eruption.

Two Jetstar flights on their way to Denpasar from Sydney and Melbourne were forced to turn around midway through their flights after Mount Raung on Java erupted, causing ash clouds.

“We regret the disruption this weather event has caused our passengers and thank them for their patience as we work to provide alternative options,” Jetstar said in a statement.

“All passengers on rescheduled or cancelled flights will be notified by Jetstar or their travel agent directly and provided with options to fly on alternative services.”

Virgin Australia also flies in and out of Bali but do not have plans to cancel any flights.

Cebu Pacific, PAL, AirAsia plan Boracay expansion. Will new runway at Caticlan lead to overcapacity?

Cebu Pacific, Philippine Airlines and Philippines AirAsia are planning to pursue rapid expansion at Caticlan Airport in 2015 following the completion of a highly anticipated runway extension project. Caticlan is the closest airport to the popular Philippine resort island of Boracay but has seen limited growth over the years as it could only handle regional aircraft.

Caticlan is expected to see the launch of international flights from all three of the main airline groups in the Philippines as well as from some foreign carriers. Several of these flights will be transferred from Kalibo, an airport about 70km from Boracay that has seen rapid growth due to the constraints at Caticlan, which is only a 10min ferry trip from Boracay.

Traffic on Caticlan-Manila is also expected to grow as Cebu Pacific and PAL upgrade flights from turboprops to A320s and as AirAsia enters the market. Caticlan-Manila is already the 10th largest domestic route in the Philippines while Kalibo-Manila, which will almost certainly see a decline in traffic, is now the fourth largest.

Riot police disperse Istanbul’s Pride parade

Last weekend, while Americans celebrated a victorious ruling at the Supreme Court, riot police disbanded a Pride parade in Istanbul, Turkey.

According to Boysan Yakar, a Turkish LGBT activist and former HRC fellow, riot police used water cannons and rubber pellets to disperse Istanbul’s 13th annual pride parade, writes Adrian Gonzalez on the HRC Blog.

“Our community is in shock at the harassment we faced during Pride this year,” Yakar told HRC. “There is no excuse for such behavior especially from the police.”

According to Reuters, the event was banned because it coincided with the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, although other LGBT events have occurred in the past during Ramadan peacefully.

Last year’s pride parade, which was during Ramadan and attracted tens of thousands of attendees, had police on the scene, but they were there to intervene in the event of violence rather than to stop the celebration altogether.

While homosexuality is not a crime in Turkey, unlike many other Muslim countries, homophobia remains widespread. Critics say President Tayyip Erdogan and the ruling AK Party he founded have shown little interest in expanding rights for minorities, gays and women, and are intolerant of dissent.

The parade has been held in the past and has been described as the biggest gay pride event in the Muslim world.
“These people do not hurl stones and they never would. They do not throw petrol bombs. They just ask for a legal recognition,” said one supporter, who gave his name as Bulent.

“This summarizes what has been happening in Turkey. Any request for rights is met like this.”

Geneva hotels rated most expensive to dine in; London ranks fifth costliest for full-day meal

(CNN)Forget the debate over whether it should come with or without a fried egg.

The club sandwich is the center of a much more important discussion this week — international hotel dining costs.

Hotels.com has released the results of its annual Club Sandwich Index (CSI), which ranks cities according to the average price you can expect to pay for that beautiful stack of poultry, bacon, egg (maybe), lettuce, tomato and mayo in mid- to high-end hotels.
