A tradition dating back more than two thousand years, dough sculpture-making is popular at festivals today. Skilled artists—using their hands, scissors, small knives, and pointy sticks—can shape small intricate sculptures in a matter of minutes.
Using dough made from flour or glutinous rice, dough sculptures create animals, geometric patterns, and human figures drawn from history, folktales, novels and operas. Artists typically begin by blending different types of dough to create vibrant colors. Then they pinch, twist, cut, carve and mold the dough into different shapes and to add decorative patterns.

面塑,早在汉代就已有文字记载,民间俗称“面人”。以面粉、糯米面为主要原料,调和成不同的颜色,再经捏、搓、揉、掀,或用小竹刀灵巧地点、切、刻、划等工艺塑造出丰富的艺术形象,包括各种神话故事、戏剧中的角色和历史人物等。
张宝琳,中国民间工艺美术家,北京民间文艺家协会会员。1970年开始从事面塑艺术的研究与创作,出访过美洲、欧洲、亚洲、非洲20多个国家和地区进行文化艺术交流和非物质文化遗产的展演,曾为塞拉里昂总统史蒂文斯、世界著名指挥家络琳马赛尔等名人塑像,得到广泛赞誉。作品曾荣获“中国民间文艺山花奖·民间工艺美术金奖”等多个奖项,参与编著书籍《张宝琳面塑艺术作品集》、《民间——面塑技法》。
